The story follows Jake Sully, a paralyzed former Marine who replaces his deceased twin brother in the Avatar Program on Pandora, a lush habitable moon inhabited by the Na'vi, a humanoid indigenous species.
Jake's mission is to infiltrate the Na'vi people and gather intelligence to help a corporate mining operation extract a valuable mineral called "unobtanium." Through his avatar (a genetically engineered hybrid body), Jake becomes immersed in Na'vi culture, falls in love with Neytiri, and ultimately must choose between his human mission and protecting Pandora from human destruction.
